Client Brief

The clients, a couple running Ponnu Supermarket for 20 years, sought a residence reflecting their retirement aspirations, spiritual values, and family traditions. With two married daughters, the home needed private bedrooms for them, along with a guest room. A priority was creating holistic spaces connected with nature while accommodating large prayer gatherings. They wanted areas that seamlessly support public events, family leisure, and private living. The design also had to consider the large site (19,000 sqft), future legacy for their grandchildren, and cost-effective construction suited to the site’s clay soil conditions.

Design Process

The design process began with understanding the clients’ lifestyle, spiritual practices, and legacy. Since they regularly host prayers with 50–100 guests, the residence was divided into public, semi-private, and private zones. The layout evolved into two interconnected blocks, with double-height spaces in the prayer and living areas to accommodate gatherings. The orientation was carefully planned so that the master bedroom overlooks landscaped views, avoiding blank walls. Structural solutions responded to the clay soil conditions, where traditional rubble consolidation was chosen over pile foundations, ensuring stability while respecting local methods. The process balanced functionality, spirituality, and contextual sensitivity.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to balance community, spirituality, and retreat within one home. Zoning into public, semi-private, and private realms ensured clarity while preserving harmony. Integrating traditional rubble consolidation with modern openness, the design mediates between gathering spaces and intimate retreats, maintaining fluid connections with light, landscape, and local wisdom.
